Many of us have seen the signs around town for the Wearable Art Awards. The awards are presented by the Port Moody Arts Centre Society, and feature artists and entries from across Canada and the United States. Artists submit work to one of five categories: Open, Recycled, Brassiere, Headdress, and Olympic. $5000 in prize money is awarded to the winner in each category, as well as four special awards for People’s Choice, Conceptual, Best-In-Show, and Student.

Each piece that is included passes a rigorous examination by distinguished jurors and judges from the fashion and textile industry. Submissions are examined for its creativity, originality, skill in construction and conceptual idea. The result is a show full of amazing and original wearable art.

The awards kick off this weekend, starting with the Red Carpet Gala on May 9 at the City Hall Galleria at 100 Newport Drive. Doors open at 6:30pm and the show starts at 7:15. On May 10 the Mother’s Day Afternoon Extraordinaire & Awards Ceremony will take place at the City Hall Galleria. Doors open at 1:30pm for that event, and the show starts at 2:00. Tickets for each show are $35, and can be purchased by calling 604-931-2008 or visiting the Port Moody Arts Centre at 2425 St. Johns Street.

Following the performances this weekend, an exhibition will run from May 14 – June 28 at the Port Moody Arts Centre. So even those of us who are hockey fans (Go Canucks!) or have previous Mother’s Day commitments will be able to take part and admire the wearable art created by the talented artists.
