Spring Break is happening from March 21 – April 1 this year in School District 43, which means it’s coming up fast. If you’re looking for some suggestions for how to keep your kids occupied, we’ve compiled a list. Our thanks to the folks at ArtsConnect for giving us a head start on the arts and culture camps!

Spring Mini Day Camps
March 21 – 25 and March 28 – April 1, 9:45am – 3:00pm
Ages 6 – 12
Introduce your children or grandchildren to an active outdoor lifestyle and perhaps, their first camp experience. Children should dress for the weather and bring a lunch, sweater and rain jacket.

Spring Break at City Centre Aquatic Complex
March 21 – 25 or March 28 – April 1, 12:00 – 4:00pm
Ages 7 – 12
This four hour camp will begin with games, activities and crafts in the camp room followed by a swim in the wave pool. Please pack a bathing suit, towel and snack. Single day or full week options.

Spring Break at Chimo Pool
March 21 – 25 or March 28 – April 1, 12:00 – 4:00pm
Ages 7 – 12
Aqua Camps at Chimo. Four hour camp includes swimming, crafts, games and more. Please bring bathing suit, towel and snack. Single day or full week options.

Kids on the Go at Poirier Community Centre
March 21 – 25 or March 28 – April 1, 9:00am – 4:00pm
Separate sessions for ages 5-6 and ages 7-9
Join us for a full day of cooperative games and activities, sports, arts, crafts, and much more.

Full Day Camp at Pinetree Community Centre
March 21 – 25 or March 28 – April 1, 9:00am – 3:00pm
Separate sessions for ages 5 1/2-7 and ages 8-10
Come and join us for the Springtime Activity week of fun and non-stop actitivity. Participate in crafts, cooking and sports. There will be a BBQ and a team challenge on the last day of the camp.

Kids on Stage
March 21 – 25, 9am – 3pm
Ages 7 – 12
Kids on Stage is a weeklong camp with a focus on theater fun! Kids will be completely immersed in the creation of a play including set design, costumes and all the other little details that go into putting on a play. Also included is admission to both presenations headlining this year’s Spring Break Festival (see above). On the Friday, kids will present their play to family and friends.

From Script to Stage
March 28 – April 1, 9am – 3pm
Ages 7 – 12
The play’s the thing! This full day, all week workshop is all about the product – putting on a show. The week will be devoted to staging the play, How to Eat Like a Child by Delia Ephron, a popular writer, screenwriter and producer. On Friday, the show goes live for family and friends.

Exploring the Natural World
March 28 – April 1, 9 – 11:30am
Ages 8 – 12
Artists have always looked to the natural world for inspiration – Leonardo da Vinci, Henri Matisse, Fenwick Lansdowne, Emily Carr and Jack Shadbolt, as will our art students. They will learn drawing techniques with a variety of media and explore the art of painting in watercolour, tempera and collage. Each day students will explore a different way of seeing and creating artworks in a new inspired way.

Great Canadian Artist Series II
March 28 – April 1, 12:30 – 3pm
Ages 8 – 12
Budding artists in this half day camp will focus on a different famous Canadian artist each day, including, Tom Thomson, Bill Reid, Gathie Falk, David Blackwood and Ann Kipling, while exploring different media such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing and ceramics.

Spring Break Art Camp
March 28 – April 1, 9am – 1pm or 1 – 5pm or 9am – 5pm
Ages 5 – 12
Koko’s Spring Break Art Camp combines supervised play and activities with different exciting and creative art classes and activities each day! Full-day and half-day (morning or afternoon) camps available. Art classes include drawing, painting, cartooning and claymation.

Place des Arts’ Spring Break Art Camp is back for 5 days from March 29 to April 1. Blocks of activities in music, dance, drama and visual art engage kids in kindergarten to grade 5. Play, learn, and get creative! Optional after-hours care also available.

Spring Break Mud Sling
March 21 – 25, 12:35 – 3:35pm
Grades 6-8
Get your hands in the mud and spin up some fun in this pottery class with instructor Vin Arora! Learn the basics of wheel throwing and engage in a hand-building project to make decorative and functional works of art.

Young Shakespeareans Workshop
March 21 – April 1, 9:00am – 12:00pm
Grades 6-8
Professional actors from Bard on the Beach will lead you on a creative journey through an abridged version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Gain a greater appreciation for Shakespeare while learning more about acting, voice and movement for the stage. The workshop concludes with a final presentation on Sunday April 3. You and a guest will also have the opportunity to enjoy one of Bard’s mainstage productions in June 2011.

Cats! Musical Theatre Stars Spring Break Camp at Leigh Square
March 21 – 25, 9am – 4pm
Ages 7 – 12
In partnership with Theatrix Youtheatre Society, this five-day camp introduces basic dram and improv skills, focusing on the Broadway musical, Cats. The mornings are a fun exploration of the performing arts through playbuilding and musical theatre. Learn auditioning techniques, explore character development through improv, create set designs, and learn choreography to well known songs. Get goofy in the afternoons with theatre games, madlibs, and some fun, active outdoor recreation! On the last day, children will have a chance to perform their play in front of an audience.

We Got the Beat! Jam Session Spring Break Camp at Leigh Square
March 28 – April 1, 9am – 12pm
Ages 4 – 6
Make your own simple musical instruments, learn to play beats, sing songs, and move to the music! Learn rhythm and get creative with the performing arts in this one week camp for tots!

Pound Paste and Mould Spring Break Art Camp at Leigh Square
March 28 – April 1, 12:00 – 3:30pm
Ages 4 – 6
Get your hands dirty! Get outside and collect flowers to turn to paper, build creatures out of clay, print on paper, fabric and more with this creative camp for tots!

Kindercrew Play Camp at Hyde Creek
March 21 – 25 or March 28 – April 1, 9:00am – 12:00pm or 1:00-4:00pm
Ages 3 – 5
We will have fun activities all geared for preschool children! The theme is spring activities and we will fit in crafts, stories, play and music to have your children want to come back for more!!! Field trip included.

Junior Sneakers Day Camp at Hyde Creek
March 21 – 25 or March 28 – April 1, 9:00am – 4:00pm
Ages 5 – 7
We will have fun activities all geared for preschool children! The theme is winter activities and we will fit in crafts, stories, play and music to have your children want to come back for more!!! Swimming may be included depending on volunteers.

Sneakers Day Camp at Hyde Creek
March 21 – 25 or March 28 – April 1, 9:00am – 4:00pm
Ages 7 – 10
We will have fun activities all geared for school aged children! The theme is winter activities and we will fit in crafts, games, music & swimming to have your children want to come back for more!!! Please send snacks, lunch and swimming gear each day.

Spring Break Camp at Hyde Creek
March 21 – 25 or March 28 – April 1, 9:00am – 4:00pm
Ages 11 – 14
This awesome week includes Paintball, Swimming, Go-Carts, Castle Fun Park, and more. Price includes admission costs, equipment rental, transportation, and supervision. Each day the participants need to bring a bag lunch, swimsuit, towel, snacks and appropriate clothing. Out-trip locations are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances.

Babysitters’ Spring Break Camp at PoCo Rec Complex
March 22 – 25, 10:00am – 3:00pm
Ages 11+
This course is recognized by the Canadian Red Cross Association. Students will learn how to be a successful Babysitter, create a resume, gain practical experience with young children, and have fun. Outdoor games, swimming and gym activities included. Certification will be issued upon successful completion of the course. Student manual included.

Afternoon Clay

5 – 14 years
Children learn the basics of hand building while creating fun projects. This is a creative way to spend the afternoon. Bring your imaginations!

Art Effects

Fun, fun, fun! Create art in exciting ways using clay, drawing, painting, cartooning and crafts and so much more!

Art and Drama

6 – 12 years
Spend half the day drawing, painting, making puppets and masks and half the day learning theatre games, creating skits and making puppet plays.

Art in the Afternoon
March 21 – 25 or March 28 – April 1, 12:30 – 3:00pm
7 – 10 years
A fun and artistic way to spend the afternoon. Projects include painting, drawing, rock painting, print making and creating small sculptures plus many more fun activities.

Creating Art
March 28 – April 1, 12:30 – 3:00pm
6 – 10 years
Draw and paint and create art using a variety of materials in this fun and exciting program. Bring your imaginations!

Family Clay
March 21 – 25 or March 28 – April 1, 9:00 – 11:30am
1 child, 1 parent
Families get creative together in this four-day clay program. Parents and children work side by side on their own hand building projects with lots of fun ideas and guidance from the instructor.

Painting with Acrylic on Canvas
March 28 – April 1, 12:30 – 3:00pm
11 – 15 years
From concept to finished painting, Agata expertly leads a small class of young artists in creating their own masterpieces using acrylic techniques on canvas. All supplies (canvas, paints, brushes, etc) are supplied.

Wire Crochet Jewelry
March 21 – 25, 12:30 – 3:00pm
12 – 16 years
Personalize your jewelry collection! Make intricate and uniques pieces out of wire and beads using just a crochet hook. With traditional stitches and a non-traditional medium create wire necklaces, pendants and bracelets in this fun program. All tools, wire and beads supplied. No experienced required!

Youth Pottery
March 21 – 25 or March 28 – April 1, 9:30am – 12:00pm
10 – 14 years
Clive Tucker teaches these small classes and gives individual attention to each student to help them make pots on the potter’s wheel. He will guide you through the challenge of centering the wayward clay to glazing your creations. This is a short, fun class guaranteed to get you dirty and come home with some clean dishes. Class includes throwing on the wheel and some handbuilding.
