Looking for some holiday fun this weekend? Bring the whole family to Carré Heritage Square [map] on Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 4:30-7:30pm for Light up the Square: A Lantern Affair! This free community event is hosted by Place des Arts, Mackin House Museum and Gare de Fraser Mills Station.
Light up the Square: A Lantern Affair embodies the true spirit of the season. It brings the whole community together for arts and crafts activities, high-quality entertainment and delicious food. TheV3H is proud to be a media sponsor. If you haven’t attended this event before, you have to check it out. You won’t be disappointed!
During the Lantern Affair celebration, you’ll help lure in the light with a thunderous taiko drumming ceremony. This ceremony is inspired by the ancient Japanese legend of Amaterasu, which tells the story of the small goddess Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto who coaxed the sun from a cave using a large drum or taiko!
Another highlight of this year’s event is the Canadian premiere of a special musical rendition of Dylan Thomas’ iconic poem A Child’s Christmas in Wales by RAProductions. This new version was adapted by Charlotte Moore, Artistic Director of the Irish Repertory Company and premiered in New York in 2010. It is a beautifully written and wistful piece about strange relatives, snowy adventures, awful holiday food and the anticipation of presents.
The holidays are all about food, and what winter festivity would be any fun without hot chocolate? Tim Hortons Community Cruiser will be on site serving sweet, warm cupfuls (to which adults may add a wee dram of Bailey’s if they like). Sweets, savouries and apple cider will also be available at the Noël Café over the course of the event and Carolyn Nick and Riek Ruys are returning to sell their delicious homemade goodies and jams.
Place des Arts’ Christmas Boutique will be open during the event. Check out the affordable, locally made fine-art wares and finish off your holiday shopping. Or buy a ticket for this year’s Light up the Square raffle basket, which is brimming with exquisite hand-crafted artisan wares.
