A few major events are taking place this week in the Tri-Cities: we have a few great concerts, the Golden Spike Days 3rd Annual Pub Night Fundraiser, the popular Unwined event, and then some great options for Mother’s Day. Enjoy!

What: Unplugged at the Crossroads Coffeehouse

Where: The Gathering Place [map]
The skinny: Port na Gael (or, more correctly, Port na nGael for students of Irish grammar), means tune of the Gael, and that’s exactly what this four-piece group plays – mostly Irish most of the time. From four-part harmonies to spirited reels, their focus is on traditional music with vitality, sometimes updated by original arrangements, but always true to its roots. The occasional foray into Canadian, Scottish and English songs provides a folk influence to the lively mix.

What: Bad Day to go Fishing

The skinny: For the past six decades, there has been only one “King of the Blues” – Riley B. King – affectionately known as B.B. King. Since B.B. started recording in the late 40’s, he has released over fifty albums … many of which are considered blues classics including 1965’s definitive live blues album, Live At The Regal and 1976’s collaboration with Bobby “Blue” Band, Together For The First Time.

What: May Day Mile

The skinny: Join in this free all-ages fun run along the May Day Parade route in celebration of Move for Health Day! The one-mile route takes you through the streets of downtown Port Coquitlam, which will be cleared of traffic in preparation for the Rotary May Day Parade at 11 am. The run starts and ends at the crosswalk at Shaughnessy Street and Wilson Avenue.

What: “Contemplating After Easter: Ritual and Prayer” Concert

The skinny: Port Moody’s Yarilo Music Ensemble will launch its Spring Season series with a concert. On the program will be familiar works by Rachmaninoff and John Tavener and others. The highlight of the concert will be the world premiere by Vancouver composer Colin MacDonald, based on ancient Orphic ritual fire dancing. What: Russian Jewish Culture Presentation
