If you live in the Tri-Cities you often see and hear that Port Moody is the City of Arts. However, it would be fair to ask why that is. We don’t have fancy galleries full of Monet and Van Gogh paintings, nor do we have composers running about on every corner composing pieces that are better than Mozart and Beethoven. So why exactly is Port Moody the City of Arts? Well the person who came up with that motto may have been onto something. The city makes a point of developing the arts and nurturing a strong cultural community. From new experiences to furthering your skills in any form of art, the Port Moody Arts Centre is offering summer programs suitable for children, youth and adults.
Children’s camps include week-long all day and part day camps that run all summer long. There are a wide variety of opportunities available for children. Your kids can spend their summer learning about anything from sewing to animation and theatrical camps. All of them promise that kids will be engaged and leave with at least one finished project to show off and hang on the fridge. Children can learn how to use the sewing machine or create their own cartoons by working with highly qualified instructors. Do check age requirements before registering, though.
The fun isn’t limited to children. Adults can try their hand at visual arts, photography and ceramics. Classes are encouraging and supplies are included with instructors available to answer any questions and provide step by step instruction to those who need it. For more information about programs available contact Jane Matthews by calling 604.931.2008 x104 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
This summer the Port Moody Arts Centre is also presenting their Art in the Garden You’ll be able to tour 10 gardens in Port Moody, Anmore and Belcarra locations and take in some 2D and 3D art at the same time. If you have any spare plants in your garden, the Port Moody Arts Centre would love to have them to be used in a plant sale that will run during this event. They are also currently collecting any arts supplies, tools, craft items, unloved art, frames, art books, craft storage, and safety equipment (think goggles and aprons). These items will all be sold at the FREE Art and Garden Fair on Arts Centre grounds during Art in the Garden. You can drop off your items at the Arts Centre, or call them to arrange pick up.
