What’s Up in the Tri-Cities: Opening Receptions, Dancing, Garden Tour + More!

Another light week here in the Tri-Cities; just a few events to enjoy. We have two gallery opening receptions, a film night, some dancing, the Art in the Garden Tour & Fair and Coquitlam Farmer’s Market 7th Annual Salmon and Burger BBQ plus an informative session about caring for family members with dementia.

What: Port Moody Arts Centre Opening Reception
When: Thursday, July 12 from 6:00-8:00pm

The skinny: This exhibition explores the considerable talents of our Instructors here at the Port Moody Arts Centre. These shows will feature the art work of Eyrne Donahue, Pauline Doyle, Chantel Goller, Ngaire Halina, Rosemary Hanna, Colette Lisoway, Lili Masbough, Amanda Maxwell, Tammy Pilon, Sarah Ronald, Parisa Shafazand, Jacqueline Sheridan, Carolyn Sullivan, Clive Tucker and Agata Teodorowicz.

What: Place Des Arts Exhibition Opening Reception

The skinny: Join us for the opening reception for one new exhibition: Around the Inlet, multiple media works by Suite E Life Drawing Group in the Atrium Gallery. Community members are invited to drop by and assist Joy Kirkwood with Place des Arts’ community banner project which will be set up for the duration of the opening reception.

What: Film Night – Departures
When: Friday, July 13 at 7:30pm

The skinny: Kobayashi, an unemployed cellist decides to move back to his old hometown to look for work and start over. He answers a classified ad entitled “Departures” thinking it is an ad for a travel agency only to find that the job is for a “Nokanshi” or “encoffineer,” a funeral professional. The film follows his profound and sometimes comical journey with death as he uncovers the wonder, joy and meaning of life and living.

What: Tropical Latin Night

What: Art in the Garden Tour & Fair
When: Sunday, July 15 from 9:00am-4:00pm

The skinny: Nature unites with artistic talent in the first ever Port Moody Arts Centre Society’s Art in the Garden Tour, combining 10 beautiful private gardens with 2 and 3 dimensional visual art and live music to create a unique event celebrating art and nature. The event runs at various locations in Port Moody, Anmore and Belcarra.

What: 7th Annual Salmon and Burger BBQ

What: At the Breaking Point:  Family Caregiving & Dementia
When: Wednesday, July 18 from 1:30-3:30pm
Where: Coquitlam Library – Poirier [map]
The skinny: At the Breaking Point is a DVD showing real families dealing with the challenge of caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s. Dorothy Leclair, Support and Education Coordinator from the North Fraser Alzheimer Resource Centre, will use the film to lead participants in a discussion of family caregiving—from the effects of Alzheimer’s on changing family roles, to the decision to find a care facility, to the right to die with dignity.
