Daniel’s Mediterranean Tapas & Grill: Upscale Dining in the Tri-Cities

Daniel's Restaurant

Do you ever find yourself wanting to enjoy an upscale dinner without having to make that drive into downtown Vancouver? Options for fine dining may not be as abundant in the Tri-Cities, but that’s not to say we don’t have some great restaurants to choose from for those special occasions. And if you haven’t heard of Daniel’s Mediterranean Tapas & Grill yet, you’ll definitely want to pay attention to this article.

Live Music on Fridays and Saturdays

Live Music

Located on Barnet Highway in Coquitlam, this Mediterranean tapas bar is a nice addition to the many chain restaurants that fill the area.  Daniel’s offers an upscale menu without the stuffiness of fine dining. A relaxed atmosphere with live music offered on Fridays and Saturdays makes for a great night out. We were there when they had a lady with her soft singing voice provide some lovely background music. Singing tunes like Louis Armstrong’s “It’s a Wonderful World” put me in my happy place. The packed house seemed to enjoy the music too with the applause that ensued.

Mediterranean Inspired Menu

I was excited when my first course arrived: wild mushroom risotto balls. These were cheesy on the inside which was a nice contrast to their crispy crusted outside. The sun-dried tomato sauce and balsamic reduction that was drizzled over top was a nice blend of flavours. I would definitely recommend this dish.

Although Daniel’s restaurant is focused on healthy Mediterranean seafood cuisine using Ocean Wise products, I couldn’t help but choose their ravioli dish. Filled with wild mushroom and marscarpone cheese, the ravioli had a very distinct mushroom taste but it was softened with the tangy tomato sauce mixed with onions, basil, peas, cherry tomatoes, and sprinkled with shaved parmigiano & reggiano cheeses and fresh, crisp sprouts. I loved all the vegetables mixed into the sauce.

My husband had the Pan Roasted Wild Sockeye Salmon with Shrimp and loved the pea and lobster risotto that accompanied it. As for the salmon, it was cooked a little too well-done for his liking but to be fair, he never inquired how they normally cook their salmon and did not request to have it cooked medium-well.  So when ordering the salmon, if you like it other than well-done, just remember to request it.

For dessert, we settled on mocha ice cream.  They definitely had fancier dessert options but we opted for the simple, rich and creamy ice cream to end our meal.

Golden Plates 2012 Award Winner

Daniel’s restaurant beautifully plates their dishes, they have a menu variety that is sure to meet many tastes and a price range to meet many wallets with lunch items from $6-$14 and $7-$32 for dinner items.  Although it might get lost in the shuffle in Vancouver, it definitely has a competitive edge and is a great choice for a more upscale dinner out in the Tri-Cities. And if you don’t want to take my word for it, The Georgia Straight‘s readers choice poll awarded Daniel’s Mediterranean Tapas & Grill  the 2012 Golden Plates Award for “Best New Restaurant Outside Vancouver”.
