I have visited Eden West Fine Foods and Gifts off and on for a number of years for their specialty food products and kitchen gadgets. They have been a Port Moody mainstay for a while now, but they have recently had a change in ownership. Though it is business as usual in many ways, it is also an exciting time to look to the future of this Tri-Cities specialty store. New owners Chris and Paula Beall are excited to carry on the Eden West name, and while it seems it has been a whirlwind since taking over in March, they feel they are getting their wheels underneath them and gaining traction.
Cooking Classes at Eden West
Chef Chris has been providing cooking classes at Eden West for a few years now. He is one of about five regular chefs that are ‘on call’ to come and teach. When the previous owner asked Chris if he was interested in buying Eden West and taking over, Chris purchased a bottle of wine, took it home to Paula and suggested the couple take on a new challenge. With a young family, Chris working as a buyer for a number of local restaurants and taking on a new position as Executive Chef at Port Moody’s Boathouse Restaurant it was a hard decision to make. In the end it was one the Bealls felt couldn’t be passed up. Paula works a few days a week and Chris still teaches classes while juggling his other responsibilities but they are managing to have fun and maintain a high level of professional expertise at the Eden West store on St. John’s.
There are classes available all the time covering a wide range of interests and cuisines – view the current class schedule at www.edenwest.ca. Whether is it creating a gift basket or improving your cooking skills there is something for everyone. They have classes for kids, teens and adults, in the store’s teaching kitchen. Paula mentioned to me that they have had couples come in for ‘date nights’ to learn something new together, and that they have also hosted a number of ‘team building’ classes where local businesses have booked a class with all their employees to learn and laugh together.
Fun and Fabulous Kitchen Gadgets
After a class is complete the food is enjoyed by the participants in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Paula told me that the chefs seem to enjoy it as much as the attendees as they get a change to do a little ‘show and tell’ of their talents and have some fun helping others to discover the joys of cooking. The classes are small, relaxed and fun, as well as educational. If you see class you’re interested in and you can sign up in person or over the phone at 604.939.6200. And if you ‘like’ them on Facebook, you could win a free class.
Among the already impressive inventory of specialty gourmet foods and gift baskets Eden West has introduced East of Eden, a new specialty label of spice blends and salts that Chris has sourced himself. They’re blended on-site for your enjoyment. Imagine sprinkling a chili infused salt on your morning eggs or your grilling steak instead of the plain variety. Other products on offer include sauces, condiments, oils, vinegars, teas, salsas, cocktail crackers, smoked salmon, cheeses, Belgian chocolate…the list goes on as there is something for every taste. After a wander through the aisles you may be inspired to culinary greatness yourself! If you find that your kitchen equipment is lacking or, like me, you just like having all the kitchen gadgets to do those specialty tasks, Eden West has a large supply of those also. Whether it’s a simple scraper or a mandolin slicer for you or as a gift, there’s something for all at-home chefs.
