Korean Heritage Day Festival 2012 Coquitlam

“Take the Long Way Home” and stop by the Red Robinson Show Theatre in Coquitlam to hear Roger Hodgson sing his legendary tunes, learn about your Korean neighbours and take in the Annual Korean Heritage Day Festival or “grab your crayons” and head down to the Place des Arts to show off your creative side and help draw and paint the community banners that will decorate the Carré Heritage Square site.  All your favourite outdoor summer music events are in full swing this weekend and Family Fun Days continue at the Port Moody Station Museum.  Summer flies by so fast so enjoy all the summer pickings while you can!

What:  Port Coquitlam Farmers Market
When:  Thursday, August 2  from 3:00 – 7:00pm
Where:  Leigh Square off Shaughnessy Street next to City Hall in Port Coquitlam [map]
The skinny:  This week’s theme: International Day with cooking by SiriKirtan 3:30pm and Krishna Jamal at 4:30pm.  This is a lively afternoon farmers’ market bringing freshly picked vegetables and fruit from nearby farms into the downtown. Delicious sweets and savouries are available from many prepared food vendors. Linger awhile and enjoy the music of local young and not-so-young musicians while you have a light supper from Didi’s Greek Pita (try the chicken souvlaki!) and the best coffee ever from Vango Espresso.

What:  11th Annual Korean Heritage Day Festival
When:  Saturday, August 4  from 11:00am – 7:00pm
Where:  Blue Mountain Park 975 King Albert Avenue [map]
The skinny:  Bring your family and friends to Blue Mountain Park for outdoor entertainment, a singing competition, a clay-making contest for children, games and ethnic food. What:  Village Vibe Concert Series – Etienne Siew and Wintercoast
When:  Saturday, August 4 from 2:00 – 4:00pm
Where:  Leigh Square Community Arts Village, 2253 Leigh Square [map]
The skinny:Village Vibe takes place on a covered outdoor stage at Leigh Square every Saturday afternoon from July – August and features emerging performers in dance, music and improv. The program is free for the community to attend as a way to enhance the arts/cultural life of the city and provides opportunities for local artists to gain exposure and experience in front of a live audience.  All ages welcome. What:  Roger Hodgson: The Legendary Voice Of Supertramp
When:  Saturday, August 4 at 8:00pm
Where:  Red Robinson Show Theatre 2080 United Blvd [map]
The skinny:  Roger Hodgson, widely regarded as one of the most gifted composers, songwriters and lyricists of our time, co-founded the progressive rock band Supertramp with Rick Davies in 1969. Hodgson wrote and sang most of the classic hits that brought the band worldwide acclaim selling over 60 million records through the 70’s and early 80’s. He gave us such amazingly enduring songs as “Dreamer”, “Give a Little Bit”, “Fool’s Overture”, “The Logical Song”, “Take the Long Way Home”, “Breakfast In America” and “It’s Raining Again”.

What:  Chinese Legacies, Family Fun Days

The skinny:  In honour of our new exhibit, “Chinese Legacies”, the Port Moody Station Museum is hosting weekly family days all summer. Join us for lantern crafts and scavenger hunts; you can even try your hand at spike driving. Look for special guests each week demonstrating traditional Chinese culture. The skinny:  In Lions Park every Sunday at 2 pm throughout July & August, Music in the Park features the finest professional musicians from across Metro Vancouver playing a variety of genres including jazz, blues, folk, world fusion, and contemporary.  All ages welcome. What:  Summer Sunday Concert – Oliver & The Elements

Oliver & The Elements – Oliver Conway has appeared at Summer Sundays in the past but this is the first time here with his all-star band, The Elements. What:  Community Banner Project

The skinny:  Place des Arts is turning 40 and to kick off the 2012/13 anniversary season, we’re inviting the community to participate in a banner project to create vibrant new banners for the Carré Heritage Square site. Thanks to a $3000.00 grant from the Coquitlam Foundation, Place des Arts has engaged experienced local artist and Place des Arts teacher Joy Kirkwood to design the banners and lead a series of community engagements. Joy’s designs will incorporate local history and culture with native flora and fauna to reflect the flavour of the community and enhance the aesthetic appeal of Carré Heritage Square. Community members are invited to drop by and help Joy draw and paint the banners, ask questions or provide feedback. Admission: Free
