This weekend is all about culture and rivers. Rivers? Yes, it is World River Day and both Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam have events going on celebrating our rivers. September also has all the provinces and territories celebrating Cultural Days and the Tri-Cities is joining in with their many cultural events happening around town. What: Share the Harvest: Euro Craft Beer Tasting

The skinny: Christopher Stewart Wines & Spirits, Pasta Polo Restaurant, and West Coast Wine Education presents an exciting evening tasting eight different craft beers from Europe on the Patio at Pasta Polo. What: Culture Market at Leigh Square

The skinny: A Culture Day event for the City of Port Coquitlam. Culture Days is the weekend of all weekends to get out into your community and get a peek at the creative explosion happening in your very own neighbourhood! Come down to Leigh Square for live music, the opening reception of an art exhibit entitled A View From Water’s Edge, unique vendors demonstrating their process and selling goods ranging from handmade leather things to pottery, childrens’ books, organic bath and skin products, jewelry, printed photography, housewares, and other great pieces of original art to adorn your life. Art Focus will be on site all day with tons of painting gear that you can try out. There will be free story time readings for children by Kinder Books and a free button-making workshop all day! Bring your own images or choose one of ours to make a button out of! Jon Kurucz will be present with a drum kit, allowing everyone from beginners to drum-pros to sit behind his set and have a go at it. Don’t be shy—just try! The skinny: Now in its 22nd year, the Evening of Caring Gala is an event of pure philanthropy as the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation raises tens of thousands of dollars for much needed hospital equipment in the fastest growing community in the Fraser Health Region. The event is held annually at the Red Robinson Show Theatre in Coquitlam. The event consists of a cocktail reception, plated sit down dinner, live & silent auctions, raffles and fundraising through Fund-A-Need.

What: World Rivers Day

The skinny: The City of Coquitlam is celebrating World Rivers Day. Representatives from local stewardship groups, the City of Coquitlam, Metro Vancouver, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the British Columbia Institute of Technology will provide guided tours of the trails and salmon habitat enhancements sites. Members of the public will have a chance to explore this beautiful park and the Coquitlam River while learning about the great work that is happening to improve the health of local salmon runs. There’s even a chance of seeing wild Pacific salmon! Metro Vancouver staff will discuss the connection between the Coquitlam River and your tap water. Tours start every half hour with the last tour scheduled at 1:00 pm.

The skinny: Come Celebrate our Rivers and Trails on the last Sunday of September each year! Port Coquitlam takes great pride in the fantastic Rivers and Trails system we have surrounding our community. At noon the Rivers and Trails Festival take place right on the Pitt River. Activities at this free community event include hands-on displays, entertainment, worm composting, demonstrations and a concession by the Port Coquitlam Lions Club.

What: Evergreen Celebrates Cultural Days

The skinny: In recognition of Culture Days (September 28 – 30, 2012), a national celebration of arts and culture, Evergreen Culture Centre is opening its doors and hosting a variety of exciting events that highlight the arts and cultural mix of our centre and programs. Drop by and listen to a concert by acclaimed classical pianist Sarah Hagen, witness the unveiling of a finished artwork by Robert Young that took approximately two years to paint, and participate in the launch of a new Tri-City-wide partnership that celebrates local artists with the inaugural lobby exhibition A View From the Water’s Edge. In addition, there will be a Classical Chinese Dance and Music Workshop and the Art Gallery will be open showcasing the exhibition Elizabeth Russell: Exchanges. Music will be provided by the Leo Bae Jazz Ensemble and refreshments will be served.
