Are you a Port Coquitlam resident who’s serious about going green and reducing the amount of waste your household produces? If so, you may want to consider entering a new contest, which will be kicking off in January.
Enter the Waste Loss Challenge
From now until November 26, 2012, PoCo residents are invited to complete the online entry form or submit a video entry at www.portcoquitlam.ca/wasteloss. They’re looking for contestants from a variety of different households: families with children, couples, individuals and seniors. However, you must be receiving city garbage collection to participate. This means that if you live in a multi-family residence, you may be out of luck.
The City of Port Coquitlam’s second Waste Loss Challenge will see four households competing to reduce what they send to the landfill. It runs from January to April 2013, and the community will follow along with their journey through blogs, video, Facebook and advertisements.
Prizes for the Contestants
Aside from bragging rights, prizes will include the new iPad, an iPod Touch, Kindle Reader, and one-night stay in a theme room donated by PoCo Inn and Suites. The iPad prize has been sponsored by Urban Impact, which provides the City’s recycling service. The four households will also receive a year’s supply of compostable paper food scrap bags donated by Bag to Earth. All good stuff!
Mayor Greg Moore is looking forward to the contest. He says, “We’re seen as leaders in managing waste, and one of the reasons for our success is that we’re continually working to engage the community to make change. If we can inspire and learn from each other, that’s even more powerful.”
Watch Your Waste-Line
The four households will be named in early December. During the contest, the city will monitor and weigh what they set out to the curb to keep everything fair. The ultimate waste loss champion will be named during Earth Week from April 16 to 22, 2012.
Whether you throw your hat in the ring or not – and actually, whether you live in Port Coquitlam or not – you can take steps to reduce your own household waste. “Watch your waste-line” and think closely about how you dispose of unwanted material in your household. The more waste you divert from the landfill the better for the planet, and the more money local governments save.
Waste Loss Tips
Here are some tips from the City of Port Coquitlam for watching your waste-line:
- Put all recyclables (e.g. clean and dry tins, plastic and paper) into your recycling box or cart.
- Put all food scraps, food-soiled papers and plant/yard trimmings into your green bin.
- Get a backyard composter for fruit, vegetable scraps and other compostables.
- Bring glass to a glass depot if it’s not picked up with your recycling (see www.portcoquitlam.ca/bluecart for locations).
- Bring small appliances and electronics to return-it centres.
- Bring refundable drink containers, milk cartons and beverage/food tetra paks to the bottle depot.
