Ryan Cousineau and his Amazing Custom Bikes

Kids Racing Bike

Last week saw the observance of Earth Day here in the Tricites. Port Coquitlam handed out compost bags while most of us were reminded to combine our shopping trips and reduce our carbon footprint. But one local guy combines the “reuse” part of the 3 R’s and creates incredibly cool forms of carbon-free transportation.

Ryan Cousineau finds old junk bikes that are headed for the landfill and fixes them up. Ryan started riding a bike to work in 2001, and started out just maintaining his commuter bikes. This led to scrounging bikes from garage sales, the trash, and through friends at his bike club.

As Ryan gained more experience in bike building, he turned to building bikes for people with special needs, people that weren’t being served by the standard bikes you’ll find in the store. One recent example was a friend’s young daughter wanted a racing bike. Unfortunately, they don’t make racing bikes small enough. So after finding a small frame and a bunch of random parts, the result was this…

Check out more pictures of the process here.

Here’s a photo slideshow with a few of the various bike projects that Ryan has taken on.

Ryan is always on the lookout for well build bikes of the 1970′s that can be restored, and once the bikes are finished he resells them. Not only would you end up with a unique bike, but one less bike would go to the landfill and you now have a handy carbon-free form of transportation. It doesn’t get better for the earth than that.

Once you get that bike on the road, make sure you sign up for the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation Wheel to Heal coming up on May 16th. We’ll be talking more about it leading up to the big day.

Haiti Fundraisers across the Tricities

haiti_earthquake

The devastating earthquake in Haiti has brought an outpouring of generosity from our community. From text message donations to our firefighters collecting donations to salsa dancing for the cause, the Tricities have come together to help.

Tomorrow evening (Tuesday, Jan 26th), Pasta Polo will be doing a fundraiser for Haiti from 5pm to 9pm. It is a Mediterranean buffet dinner with complementary glass of wine at $20.00 per guest with all the proceeds going to the Red Cross for the Haiti earthquake. The Red Cross will be at the location to collect any additional donations.

On Saturday, February 6th, Our Lady of Fatima Church in Coquitlam will host a dinner and dance to raise funds for earthquake relief. The event will take place in the Fatima Hall, doors open at 6pm and the party goes to midnight. Three bands; Now and Then, Union Jack and the Retrosonics will be performing. Child minding will be available by donation. Tickets are $40 and available at the Church, or call Lorna de Zilva at (604) 931-3180. For more info visit www.notredamedefatima.org

Remember that all donations to a charity overseeing Haitian relief will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the federal government.

If you have any other Haiti relief events or fundraisers, let me know at jon@thev3h.com or on Twitter at twitter.com/thev3h, we’ll be sure to pass it along.

Tri-Cities Chamber Announces Business Excellence Awards

2010_business_awards

This past week, the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce had one of their swankiest events of the year. The annual Business Excellence Awards Gala was held at the Red Robinson Theatre at Boulevard Casino. Every year, the Tri-Cities Chamber honours the best of the local business community. The winners for 2009/2010 are…

    Newsmaker of the Year Award

Local political rabble rouser and Tri-M Group of Companies owner Doug Stead won, but he then repatriated the award to fellow nominee Ernie “Punch” McLean of Golden Bear Mining Ltd. While Doug made plenty of news this year, former New West Bruins coach McLean walked out of the woods after being missing for 4 days in northern BC. He had previously survived a plane crash in the 70s, so the fact he was around to pick up his award is quite amazing.

Not for Profit of the Year

PoCoMo Youth Services, with their sweet Project Reach Out Bus, have been serving the youth of the Tri-Cities since 1992.

    Small Business of the Year

Beyond the Grape of Port Moody is the place to go to make your favourite wine. They have a great, up to date website, and you can follow them on Twitter for all kinds of wine goodness.

    Business Leader of the Year

Greg Barnes of Barnes-Harley-Davidson Buell opened their Port Coquitlam location in 2008 to satisfy the call of the open road.

    Business of the Year

It’s The Coquitlam Centre. For Tricities residents, the mall really needs no introduction. It’s the place to go for pretty much anything, and they have the best Mall Santa anywhere. Between you and me, in my family we have a soft spot in our hearts (and our tastebuds) for Togo Sushi.

Taste of the Tricities

Taste of the Tricities Welcome

taste_of_the_tricities

On Tuesday, September 15th I had the pleasure of attending the Taste of the Tri-Cities. This is a co-production, put on by the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce and the Society for Community Development. Local businesses and non-profits run a hopping trade show and the sounds of jazz fill the Red Robinson Show Theatre. What was not to be missed was the variety of food and drink available throughout the venue. The local restaurants pull out all the stops with a wonderful variety of culinary delights.

For me it was a chance to meet some of the people I have met though TheV3H.com in person. This website would be a whole lot harder to do without the help of all the community groups who send us emails with all the cool stuff they’re up to. If you’re active in the community and have cool stuff that you’d like people to know about, send me an email at jon <at> thev3h.com. And if you’re a local business, joining the Tri-City Chamber of Commerce is a great way to not only network with other business owners, but they have some great events throughout the year that are not to be missed.

Tri-Cities Chamber Disability Initiative

Tri Cities Chamber Challenge

Tri Cities Chamber Challenge

The Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring a new initiative to help local businesses become Disability Confident. The idea is to raise awareness about people with disabilities, and make businesses a more inclusive place to work.

The Tri-Cities Chamber wants small businesses to contact them to learn about the Tri-Cities 10 by 10 Challenge. I believe the idea is to have a certain percentage of businesses hiring people with disabilities by 2010, but there’s nothing in the press release that really states that, as the Chamber wants you to contact them to talk about it.

Businesses that contact the Chamber for more information are entered into a draw to win two entries to the Annual Chamber Golf Tournament to be held on May 14th.

To Enter, contact Karen at the Tri-Cities Chamber

call 604-464-2716, or email kcheung@tricitieschamber.com

contest closes on May 7th

You can download the contest information PDF here

UPDATE:

Just got an email from Karen at the Chamber with some more information about the project and how we can get involved.

“The 10 by 10 Challenge is about increasing employment for persons with disabilities by 10% by the year 2010. It was issued in 2006 by Minister Claude Richmond and then Mayor Sam Sullivan.”

“Locally, the Tri-Cities 10 by 10 Challenge works on building community capacity. We’re working on increasing awareness levels through customer service and employment. From there, we want to effect a long term thinking to have the local business community engaged in Disability Confidence (the act of thinking inclusively in all aspects of the business) so that there eventually will be no difference between hiring persons with disabilities and just hiring.”

The next event is:
May 7th – Business AM Breakfast
“Issues and Solutions: Managing Mental Health in the Workplace”

Award Winning seminar by the Canadian Mental Health Association and Mental Health Works offering practical strategies for business owners and managers on how to identify and address mental health issues including emotional distress and burnout at work. Engaging case studies to be provided.

Thursday, May 7th, 9:00 am to 11:30 am
Boardroom B3011, Douglas College David Lam Campus
   1250 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam
Members $20, Future Members $25 (plus GST)

~ Muffins, coffee and fruit will be served ~

Thanks Karen!
