Coquitlam Crunch Challenge

coquitlam_crunch_challenge

Coquitlam resident Alexander Bell can’t stop climbing the Coquitlam Crunch, and on Sunday, August 29th, he’s going to be climbing it as many times as he can in one day for a good cause. Bell is teaming up with the Coquitlam Foundation to raise funds and awareness for initiatives that embrace diversity in our community. Five times up the Crunch would be a minimum and ten times would probably be the maximum. Ten times would be over 40 kms with a total elevation gain of about 2800 meters or 9000 feet.

Bell says, “This year, it will be just me with the support of friends and neighbors. I would like to get some sponsors and raise a couple of hundred dollars. Next year, with more time and organizing, we can involve more people and raise a couple of thousand dollars. My vision for the future is to have people representing every diversity group to join me in ‘the Diversity Crunch’. Our aim is to raise enough money to create an endowment fund with the Coquitlam Foundation; one that can support diversity initiatives in Coquitlam for years to come.”

Bell is the Safe Harbour Coordinator for the Tri-Cities; a diversity awareness program for businesses and community agencies. “I wanted to do something that would support diversity awareness activities and raise awareness of the Safe Harbour Program. I also wanted to do something that would bring attention to the Coquitlam Foundation, a great resource we have in Coquitlam with even more potential as people learn about what it can do for our community” says Bell.

The Safe Harbour program delivers “Respect for All” workshops to businesses and agencies. The program promotes equitable treatment for all, creating an immediate safe place, and supports employees and worksites to actively implement these commitments. Toward the vision of a more welcoming community, the Tri-Cities now has its own Safe Harbour program and Bell welcomes the opportunity to bring more businesses on board. There are now over 700 Safe Harbour certified locations signed on across BC. For more information on the Safe Harbour project visit www.safeharbour.ca, or call Alexander at (778) 886-9273.

The Coquitlam Foundation is pleased to accept tax-deductible donations for the Coquitlam Crunch Challenge. You can mail a cheque to the Foundation c/o P.O. Box 2, 1207 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam, B.C., Canada, V3B 7Y3, or through the Foundation’s website www.coquitlamfoundation.com.

Wheel to Heal was launched by the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation as a new way to raise money for operating room equipment while also engaging the community in awareness for cycling, fitness, and outdoor family activities. You can also sign up as an individual on the Wheel to Heal website.

Surrounding the bike ride are plenty of things to see and do at Town Centre Park. This year there will be face painting, a colouring booth, a fun Pedalheads bike course, 20 min yoga warm up sessions, even more prizes, and a bigger post-ride celebration. Thanksgiving Weekend in the V3H

    thanksgiving_weekend

    thanksgiving_weekend

Thanksgiving is fast approaching here in the V3H, and the turkeys (or tofurkeys, depending on your preference) are looking anxious. Or at least I presume they are. It’s hard to tell with turkeys. But that’s not really the point. The point is that it’s a long weekend, and there’s stuff to do, and I am here to tell you about it.

All this week until Saturday, October 10, Cinderellas: The World’s Favourite Fairy Tale is running at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam [map]. On Saturday, October 10 the unveiling of the Shaughnessy Underpass Mural Project will be happening from 2-4pm at the Leigh Square Community Arts Village in Port Coquitlam [map]. The Shaughnessy Underpass Mural is a part of the Necklace Project, a series of 10 public art projects threaded together as individual jewels on a necklace in 10 municipalities throughout Metro Vancouver. Bert Monterona, muralist, art educator, cultural activist and artist-in-resident co-ordinated the process of creating a public art piece that reflects Port Coquitlam and its community. Port Moody Public Library’s Links to Literacy

    Port_Moody_Library_Golf

    Port_Moody_Library_Golf

The Port Moody Public Library’s 9th Annual Links to Literacy Golf Tournament and Banquet is coming up on Monday, August 31. The tournament will take place at Meadow Gardens Golf Club in Pitt Meadows, with registration at 11:00am and a shotgun start at 12:00pm. Links to Literacy is relaxed and fun, and everyone is welcome.

The day will be capped off by an evening banquet, complete with prizes and an auction. The no host bar will open at 5:30pm, and dinner and auction will start at 6:30pm. The items up for auction include a trip for two to the Port Moody Police firing range, a location portrait session by In view Images, and a dinner for four at Pasta Polo Restaurant. CTV’s Jason Pires will do the honours as Master of Ceremonies, and Canucks play-by-play announcer Johns Shorthouse will fill the role of auctioneer. If you absolutely don’t golf (and I’m sheepishly raising my hand on this one) you’re welcome to come out just for the banquet and auction.

As its name implies, the tournament raises money to support literacy in Port Moody. Funds from last year’s tournament allowed the library to bring literacy experts, such as David Bouchard and Dr. Gabor Mate, to the Inlet Theatre in Port Moody for a special evening lecture series. Proceeds from the tournament were also used for library enhancements such as an easy reading collection and computer listening station for our special needs patrons, and a talking book reader and talking books for our visually disabled patrons. Proceeds from this year’s tournament will be directed at creating a portable computer lab to provide basic and advanced training on Internet, email and other electronic resources.

Tickets for the tournament and banquet are a steal at $165 each. Tickets for the banquet and auction only are even more of a steal at $40. And of course, you can donate or sponsor the event without having to show up at all. Could there possibly be an easier way to support our local library? I don’t think so.

To register, or for more information, call 604.469.4686 or email dayna.solem@cityofportmoody.com. Get out there, support the library, and have some fun!
