Place Des Arts with Two Open Houses

ignite_place_des_arts_big

Most of us haven’t made a lot of art since we were kids, perhaps it’s time for that to change. This Thursday, September 9th, Place des Arts will hold their inaugural adults-only open house and gala exhibition reception, Ignite … an affair with art.

Ignite is a free event, sponsored by Rigamarole Winery, the Tri-City News, and us! It’s an elegant evening out for adults to explore the world of art.

The public is invited to enjoy a complimentary glass of wine, listen to music performed by a top piano student, and view exhibitions by artists Cam MacDonald, Dawn Emerson, and Place des Arts teachers and staff.

You’ll also get the chance to put down your glass of wine and try a variety of visual arts techniques. Fiber arts, drawing, painting, mixed-media, ceramics, photography and jewelry making will all be demonstrated. If you find your inner artist ready to burst forth, attendees who register for an adult class during the event receive $10 off the registration fee.

Top notch door prizes include six pairs of tickets to Vancouver Opera’s production of Lillian Alling and a pair of tickets to Place des Arts 2010-11 Faculty Concert season.

We’re actually quite lucky here in the Tricites to have Place des Arts right here in our own backyard. Their well-equipped studios are home to many incredibly skilled teachers, who can help you find that artist inside of you that may have been missing for a few years. If music is your thing, there are lessons for every age and skill level.

Place des Arts holding Ensembles Auditions

place_des_arts_ensembles

Do you know a young musician looking to step up their game? Place des Arts’ Saxophone Ensemble, and String Quartet are holding auditions for new members at the beginning of September.

Ensembles develop players’ musical and technical skills while providing performance opportunities in a variety of settings. Participants meet new people and develop community connections through local performances.

The String Quartet provides accomplished string players with the chance to further develop their performance and technical skills through the intimate language of chamber music. Accuracy in rhythm and intonation and interaction between musical players are just some of the learning benefits from playing in a small ensemble.

The Saxophone Ensemble is under the direction of Steve Kaldestad. Steve earned a MMus and BMus in jazz performance from McGill University. He has worked with such international artists as Jamie Cullum, Michael Bublé and Slide Hampton and currently performs with the award winning Jodi Proznick Quartet, the Jill Townsend Orchestra and leads his own quartet. Check out some video…

The Saxophone Ensemble’s material will reflect the instrument’s versatility, from classical music to contemporary jazz pieces. Students will be introduced to improvisation and learn the basic concepts of building a solo while developing their small ensemble performance skills. This group is ideal for students aged 10-16 years who have been playing for a minimum of 2 years.

Place des Arts is also offering two new string ensembles for beginner and intermediate level players in 2010/2011, the PdA Fiddlers and the Violin Ensemble: Intro. These groups provide young players with performance opportunities in a friendly, non-competitive environment. These groups do not require an audition and are currently accepting members for the 10/11 year.

The PdA Fiddlers is a fun introduction to the world of Celtic music. Students will develop a repertoire of simple jigs, reels and airs and perform at Light up the Square on December 4.

The Violin Ensemble:Intro provides young violinists aged 7-12 years with a fun introduction to ensemble playing while learning a variety of music. Students should have minimum 2 years private lessons or have completed RCM grade 2 or Suzuki book 2.

Call Place des Arts’ music program coordinator, Melanie Burner, at 604.664.1636 ext 38, or by email at mburner (at) placedesarts.ca to arrange an audition for the two audition groups, or check out the ensembles website at www.placedesarts.ca

Golden Spike Days Festival comes to Port Moody this week

Golden-Spike_Ricky

The largest community event in Port Moody is back for a 34th year. The Golden Spike Days Festival will take place in Rocky Point Park from Thursday, July 1st to Sunday, July 4th. TheV3H.com is a proud media partner of the festival for our second year.

The Golden Spike Days Festival was created to commemorate the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway line and its arrival at the Port Moody Station, the western terminus; with the last spike driven on November 7, 1885. The Golden Spike Days Festival is one of the oldest and longest running family events in British Columbia. The festival will attract upwards of 40,000 attendees, and will feature live entertainment, events, activites, competitions, food, and of course, Can-Can Dancers.

HOURS OF OPERATION
Thursday, July 1st – 11am to 11pm
Friday, July 2nd – 11am to 11pm
Saturday, July 3rd – 11 am to 11 pm
Sunday, July 4th – 11am to 6 pm

Admission is by donation

There were some bumps on the road to putting on the festival this year. With the changes in arts funding from the BC government, the Festival hosted a fundraising event in January. In February, the federal government kicked in some cash, and through corporate and community contributions, the Festival is on again this year. None of this means that the festival doesn’t need the financial and volunteer support of the entire community, so make sure you throw some extra money in the donation box this year to make sure we have a festival for years to come. We had a great time at last year’s festival, and I can’t wait for this year’s edition.

Tell us what your favourite Golden Spike memory is, either here in the comments or on theV3H Facebook Page. My favourite has to be last year when my daughter Hannah went once with her grandparents, once with us, and both times came home with a picture with the Can Can Dancers. To this day, when anyone asks her what she wants to be when she grows up, the answer is “Can Can Dancer.”

See you there, I’ll be the guy with theV3H.com video camera and the lemonade with the real lemon in it.

Village International de la Francophonie 2010

village_francophonie

The Festival du Bois has been a staple of the Maillardville social calendar for 21 years. Normally held in early March, this year the festival is doing something a little different. The event has been moved up to welcome locals and visitors alike during the Winter Games, and rebranded as Francophone Village 2010.

The events run this Saturday, February 13th and Sunday, February 14th in Mackin Park, 1046 Brunette Avenue, across the Lougheed Highway from Ikea.

From the press release…

Located in the heart of BC’s largest francophone community, Francophone Village 2010 promises something for the whole family to enjoy. Under the roofs of the massive Grand Chapiteau (Main Tent), Petit Chapiteau (Children’s Tent) or the popular Tente des Ateliers (Workshop Tent), audiences can listen, sing along and even dance to a vibrant and eclectic range of non-stop music, storytelling and other entertainment. Visitors can sample delicious treats like tourtière, maple taffy on snow, maple sugar pie and poutine from on-site vendors, learn fascinating facts about the history of Maillardville, join in games and revel in the warm and welcoming atmosphere that is a hallmark of the festival.

Music will be heard throughout the day under the three tents, with evening headlining concerts. Headlining the Saturday evening concert will be Alpha Yaya Diallo with his Juno Award-winning African and World Music, and Swing, with their modern take on traditional fiddle music. Here’s a video of Alpha Yaya Diallo.

Sunday evening will be the music and storytelling of Jocelyn Bérubé and Dominique Breau. Now the entire performance is in French, so if your French is as good as mine, you’d probably enjoy the earlier musical performances a little more.

Place des Arts is joining in the festivities with an exhibit by André Michel that pays homage to Hudson Bay blankets.

The entire schedule of events can be found at The Village Francophonie schedule.

Save the Golden Spike Days Festival Fundraiser

golden_spike_bentall

One of the highlights of the year here in the V3H is the Golden Spike Days Festival, held every July at Rocky Point Park. With music, food, and plenty to do for the kids; Golden Spike is going into its 34th year in 2010. That being said, not all is Golden at the festival these days. Government funding has been cut and financial support from other sources has been on the decline . The festival instituted a required admission fee last year, but more is needed in order to keep the yearly event alive.

So this year, the Festival Society will be hosting a string of events leading up to the festival. It all begins on Friday, January 29th with a concert at the Evergreen Cultural Centre featuring Canadian favourite, Barney Bentall.

Barney has been a fixture on the Canadian music scene for over 20 years. With his band the Legendary Hearts, they had a string of 5 studio albums that reached Gold or Platinum status in Canada between 1988 and 2000.

Here’s “Something to Live For” from their debut album in 1987.

The concert will take an acoustic journey through Barney’s career highlights, right up to his latest album “The Inside Passage

The concert also features local country artist Nikki Werner. You may recognize Nikki from her gigs at the Festival as well as the Point Pub here in Port Moody. I am completely biased, as I went to high school with her husband Kris, so I’ll let her incredible voice speak for itself (Kris is the guitar player in this video)

So here are the details of how you can enjoy a great evening of music, as well as support one of our favourite local events.

When: Friday, January 29th. Doors, Bar and lobby entertainment at 7:30, music begins at 8:15.

Where: Evergreen Cultural Centre. 1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam

Tickets: $30 (taxes included), from the Evergreen Box Office or through members of the Golden Spike Days Festival Committee.

Music, Memoirs and Savages

gillian_hobbs

It’s a quiet week in the V3H. The kids are back in school, people are headed back to work and the holiday festivities are nothing but a memory. But there are still a couple of ways to get out and enjoy yourself this weekend, so read on!

The Crossroads Coffeehouse kicks off its 2010 season on Friday, January 8 at the Gathering Place in Port Coquitlam [map]. Doors open at 7pm, and the open stage starts at 7:30. At 9pm, featured performer Gillian Hobbs takes to the stage. Influenced by Canadian legends like Joni Mitchell and Sarah McLachlan, Gillian’s music is captivating and empowering. Admission is $5 at the door. For more information email info@crossroadshospice.bc.ca.

On Friday, January 8 the Port Moody Film Society is presenting Savages starting at 7:30pm at Inlet Theatre [map]. The film is a sometimes-funny, sometimes-sad look at family dynamics. Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman play a pair of siblings on the cusp of middle age. Their estranged father lives across the country, but the siblings reluctantly rush to see him when they learn that he may not be able to take care of himself any longer. The film was nominated for 2 Oscars. For more information call 604.469.4571 or email info@pmfilm.ca.

On Saturday, January 9 the Port Moody Public Library presents a workshop for adults called Converting Memories to Memoir from 9:30am-12:30pm in the Park Lane room [map]. Author Lois Peterson will teach participants how to create a compelling memoir for personal use or publication. Peterson was one of the founding members of the Surrey Writer’s School and continues to teach classes there. Call 604.469.4577 for more information or to register for the free program.

Have a great week!

Place des Arts is pleased to welcome violin instructor and fiddler Rosie Carver to the music faculty in January, 2010. Rosie will lead a brand new fiddling class, PdA Fiddlers, for young violin students wishing to gain more performance experience and expand their technical skills.

A fixture in the local music scene, Rosie has performed and recorded with the Celtic group Blackthorn for over 20 years. She is trained as a classical violinist, is an Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music and is a member of the BC Registered Music Teachers’ Association. Students will develop a repertoire of simple jigs, reels and airs and perform them each term.

PdA Fiddlers is just one of the new classes at Place des Arts beginning in January of 2010. Other offerings include Group Guitar, Group Violin, Singing Fundamentals for Adults, String Quartet Junior and classes for homelearners.
