Have a great week!
The Evergreen Line is currently undergoing its environmental assessment. Once that is complete, the route will be finalized and a contractor will be selected, and construction is slated to begin in early 2011. The scheduled completion is in 2014.
After years of broken promises, it looks like we will finally get rapid transit in the Northeast sector. Speaking purely for myself, I am very happy to see this finally happening. So much development has happened in the Tri-Cities with the understanding that we would have SkyTrain here, so it’s about time that transit finally caught up with growth.
But now that the line is coming, there are a variety of questions that need to be addressed. What will the impact of construction be? Who will build it? What will the stations look like? And where will the stations be located?
That last question speaks to the heart of Port Moody’s Western Station Committee (WSC). WSC is a community-based organization working to facilitate an Evergreen SkyTrain station located in Western Port Moody. WSC believes that there is broad based local support for a SkyTrain station located in Western Port Moody and the many anticipated social, economic and environmental benefits that are expected to result. They commissioned a study in November 2009 that demonstrated that more than 70% of local residents support a western station.
Unfortunately, current Evergreen Line plans do not include a western station. The environmental studies that were done for the assessment process also do not take a western station into account. There is a station planned in the Burquitlam area, and another station planned at the Port Moody West Coast Express stop, and nothing in between.
WSC wants to see an Evergreen Line Station as close to the Barnet Highway as possible, built during the first phase of construction, together with the Murray-Clarke Connector. They argue that if construction is consolidated, it will minimize the environmental impacts, preventing the needless disturbance of environmentally-sensitive Schoolhouse Creek twice. They feel that both projects are needed for the health and sustainability of Moody Centre, and doing the work separately will unnecessarily make the environmental impact greater.
Port Moody Council agrees. Council wants to see a western station, and it also wants to see the Murray-Clarke connector.
The Ministry of Transportation has suggested that if Port Moody wants a western station, then they could increase density and get developers to pay the $20 million tab. But Port Moody Mayor Joe Trasolini asks why his city should have to pay. He points out that local residents have funded SkyTrain development throughout Metro Vancouver, via their taxes. He does not want to see that kind of density in Moody Centre, and feels that the Ministry should cover the costs just as they are covering the costs for other stations.
At this point, there is a lot of discussion, but there is no resolution in sight for a possible western station. The Western Station Committee continues to fight the good fight, advocating for its cause with Evergreen Line officials, the Ministry of Transportation and local government.
We at theV3H.com believe in the cause so much that we are now helping the committee with their website and social media outreach efforts. If you would like to stay up to date on the evolution of this discussion, visit the Western Station Committee‘s website, find them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter. You can also support their work by signing their petition or subscribing to their email newsletter. You can participate in the Evergreen Line’s environmental assessment process.
What do you think? Are you in favour of a station in Western Port Moody? Or are you concerned about other areas of the Tri-Cities that are underserved in the current Evergreen Line plan? And who do you think should be footing the bill for development? Please share your thoughts!
This is another busy week here in the V3H. Summer may be in slow decline, but the pace of events is holding strong. Read on to find out what’s happening here in our back yard!

Have a great week!
The other day I found myself at Eden West in downtown Port Moody, on the hunt for a cherry pitter. Because it is cherry season, and I love cherries, but pits are the pits. Plus, my toddler swallowed a couple, and apparently they are mildly toxic. Luckily, the source who’d sent me to Eden West was on her game, and I found my pitter. It works like a charm, I am happy to say.
Eden West was founded by Tracey Bates and opened its doors for business in May 2006. The store offers a wide variety of specialty foods, cookware and tools. Like cherry pitters. Have a great week!
Rocky Point Park in Port Moody has a constant stream of water craft heading in and out of the Inlet. Take a short walk on the long pier, and you’ll see power boats, sailboats, kayakers and rowers. One kind of boat that always catches my eye are the Stand Up Paddle Boards. If you’ve ever wondered just how people manage to stand up on what looks like a surf board while paddling through the water, have we got a day for you.
On Sunday, August 8th, Rocky Point Kayak is hosting their first ever Stand Up Paddle Board Lessons and Demo Days at Rocky Point Park. Coming in for the occasion is Bodie Shandro, Canada’s only Certified SUP Instructor.
Stand Up Paddle Surfing is one of the fastest growing water sport in the world, a sport whose roots run deep in Hawaiian history. With our lack of Hawaiian-sized waves, what began as a way to paddle on surfboards in Hawaii can be enjoyed in our protected waters here on Canada’s West Coast. Participants are able to quickly progress and develop the skills necessary to improve fitness or simply enjoy the experience of “walking on water”.
There will be two introduction to Stand Up Paddling sessions, 12pm-2pm, and 3pm-5pm. The sessions are $60 per person. Each 2 hour session covers equipment familiarization, dry land instruction, water safety, proper body position, and paddling techniques. All equipment included, board, paddle, and leash. No experience required. Space is limited so grab your spot as soon as you can. For those of you that are already “walking on water”, there will be an equipment demo day for you to try out the latest gear.
To register and get out on the water, call Rocky Point Kayak at 604-61-WATER (604-619-2837), or visit their website at www.rockypointkayak.com
The SHARE Society is running its annual Christmas in July campaign until August 16, to help collect items for needy Tri-Cities families. Like last year, the campaign is taking the form of a challenge, in which local municipalities are squaring off to see who can collect the most food.
The city that donates the most food during the challenge will be declared winner. The mayors of the losing cities will have to wear T-shirts to a council meeting proclaiming their love for the winning city. In the first annual challenge last year Port Moody emerged victorious, but it was close. This year, Port Coquitlam appears to be bringing its A game. Will that be enough? We’ll find out on August 16.
Regardless of which city collects the most food, the real winner is the SHARE food bank and the people who need it. The food bank serves needy families throughout the Tri-Cities, and the number of households who use their services is at an all-time high. The need is great. Unfortunately, donations are down this year over last. The Christmas in July campaign is a critical way that SHARE stocks its shelves, and with more families accessing the food bank and less food to give, they’re feeling the pinch.
Luckily, pitching in is easy. You can drop off your contribution at your local municipal building to help your city win the challenge. You can also drop off contributions at local grocery stores, purchase one of the $2 Buy BC coupons or drop off your non-perishables at the SHARE food bank at 2615 Clarke Street, Port Moody [map].
Donate for civic pride. Donate to help your neighbours. Donate to embarrass the losing mayors. Any reason will do, as long as you donate.
I am a big fan of the Coquitlam Farmer’s Market. It runs every Sunday from Mother’s Day until October 31 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm in the parking lot of Dogwood Pavilion, on Winslow at Poirier in Coquitlam.
With summer at its peak, there is an amazing variety of fresh local produce available. And the farmer’s market is a great place to find it. If you like to bake, can or freeze, or just eat fresh berries by the fistful, this is the time of year to do it. Local produce is fresher, tastier and more nutritious than its imported cousins. And when you shop at the market, you’re also supporting our local economy.
In addition to its main market, the Coquitlam Farmer’s Market is operating two pocket markets in the Tri-Cities area. Pocket markets are mini farmers markets offering the food their vendors grow or prepare, on their behalf. A fairly new concept in Metro Vancouver, pocket markets allow local producers, especially farmers, to focus their time and talents on growing or preparing food for local distribution and consumption while providing citizens with more locations where they can access fresh and delicious food from a known and trusted source. For the vendors, pocket markets provide an added way for them to get their food directly to your plate. This helps moves our region towards greater self-sufficiency!
Here are the details if you want to visit one of the markets yourself:
