Photos from the V3H on Flickr

We live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Pinched between the mountains and the sea, there is ample opportunity to take out the camera and capture some of the wonder that is all around us. We are quite lucky here at theV3H.com to have a vibrant Flickr group where people have been generous enough to share their pictures of the Tricities with all of us.

For the uninitiated, Flickr is the largest photo sharing site in the world, where you can share pictures with family and friends, as well as with public groups. Our public group on Flickr is called, wait for it… The V3H. Anyone can join and add pictures to the group, and there are some stunning photos in there to enjoy.

I’ve made a page now in the top menu of theV3H.com, to make it a little easier to see the slideshow of the photos that people have added to the group.

Thank you to all our group members, it’s great of you to share your incredible work. If you’ve got pictures to share, and with the Winter Olympics there will be plenty of photo opportunities, please join us at the Flickr group, we’d love to have you!

Top 5 Stories of 2009

top5_2009

We are a few days into 2010 and the leftover turkey that has kept me napping throughout the holiday season has finally vacated our fridge. As we come out of the holiday season, it’s a fun time to look back at the year that was. From this website’s inception in April to the green Christmas we just enjoyed, it’s been a great first 9 months for us.

So without further ado, here are the top 5 stories of 2009, as voted by the number of pageviews.

5. Port Moody Outdoor Pools Open

While summer may seem like a long long time ago, the middle of June brought us some sunshine and the opening of the outdoor pools in Port Moody. Just remember, we’re only 6 months away from outdoor splashing once again.

4. Federal By-Election in New Westminster-Coquitlam

On November 9th, the Federal By-Election was held in the riding of New Westminster-Coquitlam. We published interviews with all the candidates in the weeks leading up to the election. When Diana Dilworth became a little hard to find by the local media, our interview with her became quite popular. In the end, Fin Donnelly parlayed his popularity as a Coquitlam councillor and his formidable river swimming skills to secure the riding for the NDP.

3. Christmas Lights in the V3H

One of the best things about Christmas are the light displays. When the days get short, there’s nothing better than seeing a street lit up with coloured festive lights. So with the help of my daughter Hannah, we set out to see as many houses as we could and make a multimedia map with pictures and video. The videos and map were a big hit, so much so that we also made a map for where to dispose of your Christmas trees. Look for more features like that in 2010.

2. Canada Day in and around the V3H

The biggest pageview day in the history of theV3H.com was Canada Day, when almost 1000 of you came by to find a Canada Day party. Needed some Canada Day fun? We had you covered.

1. White Pine Beach Closed to Swimming

On July 17th, Metro Vancouver announced a swimming advisory at White Pine Beach, due to higher than usual fecal coliform levels in the lake. The next morning, we put up a small post about the advisory. Over the next few days, 1,892 of you read the article and generated a sizeable comment stream. On July 21st, the advisory was taken down, but the article remained popular throughout the summer. Our theory is that there really hasn’t been a lot written about White Pine Beach online, so to this day when I Google “White Pine Beach”, our article is still near the top of the search results. Goes to show that when you’re writing online, you never really know what’s going to interest people until you see the results.

Thanks to all of you for your comments, suggestions, and for coming back and visiting again and again. In 2009 we welcomed 7,951 unique visitors and had over 20,000 pageviews. We couldn’t do it without you. If you like what you read here, consider joining our mailing list to get our brand of local coverage delivered to you every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Thanks so much for a great 2009, and we look forward to meeting more of you and making more connections in 2010.

Another Video of Tricities Christmas Lights

With the traffic around Coquitlam Centre reaching epic levels, it must be the last week before Christmas. While we deck the halls around here, and try to keep our toddler from pulling down the Christmas Tree on himself, let’s have a look at some more video of the Christmas lights around town.

Video of Coquitlam Christmas Lights

Well, as the snow flys here in the V3H, Christmas is on the way. My daughter and I got out earlier this week to get some photos and video footage of some of our amazing local light displays. We have embedded the photos and the video in the map at thev3h.com/christmas, but here are the two videos we have.

602 Cottonwood Ave, Coquitlam.

All coordinated with a computer system to time the lights to the music, the effect is incredible. Visit www.mattsonlights.com for more information.

678 Folsom Street, Coquitlam

So many Santas and an incredible amount of lights make this a yearly favourite, and of all the houses we visited, this was my daughter’s favourite.

More pictures and these videos, along with our regularly updated map, can be found at www.thev3h.com/christmas. If you have a house we’re missing, or pictures and video, please email me at jon thev3h.com and let us know.

Iran Protest in Coquitlam Video

Since the beginning of the Green Revolution in Iran, a group of Iranians and supporters have regularly gathered on the corner of Mariner and the Barnet Highway. Protests are not an everyday sight here in the Tricities, so last week I had a chance to meet them and talk about the injustices that continue to happen back home.

The support of the Canadian government is needed to put greater international pressure on the regime in Iran. The protesters are happy that Canada walked out on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s speech to the UN General Assembly, but pressure needs to continue if the will of the Iranian people will one day be carried out.

Thanks to Nasser and Arzoo for sharing with us, here is the video of our conversation…

Golden Spike Days 2009

This year, the family adventure to Golden Spike took place on Sunday. Loading the two kids in the car, with the in-laws trailing close behind, we made it to Rocky Point Park in time for the 11am show of the Golden Spike Can Can Dancers. My daughter Hannah now very much wants to be a can can dancer, as they get to wear the coolest dresses. She was lucky enough to see them two days in a row, and of course had to get the picture two days in a row as well…

After the show we did the merry-go-round, the petting zoo, the bouncy castle, then had some Pajo’s for lunch. We then watched a belly dancing and salsa performance and checked out the various booths that local businesses and organizations had set up. The spray park was next, followed by the trials riders demonstration, ice cream, and our day was done.

Once again the Golden Spike Days Festival society put on a great event, with great food, entertainment, and fun for all ages. We’ll see you again next year.
